What the Fix Involves
Most houses in Windsor were built around 2007, which puts the bulk of the town's garage doors right at the point where factory-spec lift cables start to fray.
Galvanized aircraft cable brittle
Builders in that era ran 7x19 galvanized aircraft cable off torsion drums as standard equipment on the steel sectional doors that went up with those houses. Eighteen years of winters is enough to turn that cable brittle at the drum groove and at the bottom bracket, where it bends every time the door cycles.
Matching gauge and length
A cable repair job means pulling tension off both springs first, unwinding the old cable from the drum, and running new cable of the same gauge and length so the door tracks evenly on both sides.
Mismatched cables cock doors
If only one cable has let go, we still replace the pair - a mismatched old cable next to a new one is how you get a door that cocks sideways in the opening. We check the drums and bottom brackets for wear while we're in there, since a grooved drum will shred a new cable just as fast as it did the old one.

Doing It Yourself
A torsion spring under full tension can put several hundred pounds of pull on whatever's holding it, and that tension doesn't care whether you meant to release it carefully or not. We don't recommend a homeowner cable job on a torsion system, period - not because the parts are exotic, but because the winding bars and clamps that make it safe aren't something most garages have lying around. If your door has an older extension-spring setup instead of torsion, the stakes are lower, but you're still working under a door that can drop. If a cable has already snapped and the door is sitting crooked or jammed, leave it alone and call rather than trying to free it yourself.
Parts We Carry
We stock 7x19 galvanized lift cable in the gauges and lengths that match the torsion and extension setups common on Windsor's 2000s-built doors, along with the drums and bottom brackets that tend to fail alongside the cable.
Cold makes cable brittle
Windsor's winters put real strain on exterior hardware - the cold snaps that come through this part of the state stiffen cable and make brittle strands more likely to let go on a cold morning than a mild one.
Stop fittings and clips
We carry standard stop fittings and cable clips on the truck for same-visit jobs. What we don't stock are oddball lengths for custom or imported doors; those sometimes need an order, and we'll tell you that up front rather than make you wait on-site while we try to force a fit.
How Long You Are Without the Door
A straightforward two-cable replacement on a standard double door usually runs under two hours once we're on site, including re-tensioning the springs and testing the door through a full cycle. If the drums are also grooved out or a bracket is bent, add time for those parts, since cable alone won't fix a door that's fighting worn hardware underneath it. We come out from Fort Collins, about 9 miles southeast, so factor that drive into when we can get there rather than how long the repair itself takes once we arrive.
Booking a Visit
Windsor sits inside our regular service area, and we schedule cable jobs here the same as anywhere else we cover out of Fort Collins. Tell us the door's age if you know it and whether it's one cable or both that let go - that helps us bring the right drum sizes along in case the hardware needs attention too. You can see the rest of what we cover near Windsor on our area page, and if the job turns out to need more than cable work, our Fort Collins cable repair page covers the broader service details.
