What the Fix Involves
Most garage doors in Laporte went up around 1976, which puts them squarely in the steel-and-aluminum sectional era - single-layer steel panels on a standard 7-foot or 8-foot door, hung on extension or early torsion springs with galvanized lift cables running to a drum at each end of the shaft.
Thin cable, heavy cycling
That cable is thin, usually 1/8 inch, and it's been wound and unwound tens of thousands of times by now. When one strand goes, you'll see it fray at the drum first, or you'll hear a bang and watch one side of the door drop crooked.
Matched drum-size cable
The fix itself is straightforward: we wind the door down safely, unload the spring tension, pull the old cable off the drum, and run a new one matched to the drum size and door weight.
Replace both on doubles
On a double door with two cables, we replace both even if only one broke - the second one is the same age and under the same load, and it's not worth a second trip to swap it three months from now.

Why This Fails Locally
Laporte sits in a cold-severe climate band, and that matters more for cable life than people expect. Cold steel is less forgiving steel - galvanized cable that's flexed thousands of times in sub-freezing temperatures develops fatigue cracks faster than the same cable would in a mild climate, and those cracks don't announce themselves until a strand finally lets go. On a 1976-era door, the drums themselves have often worn grooves from decades of use, which chews up new cable faster if the drum isn't inspected at the same time. We also see a fair number of doors here where the original cable was never upsized when a heavier insulated replacement panel went on later - a mismatch that puts extra strain on hardware that was sized for a lighter door. None of this is unique to one house; it's a pattern tied to the age of the housing stock in this part of the county.
Parts We Carry
We stock galvanized aircraft cable in the sizes and lengths that fit the drum diameters common on doors from the 1970s through the 2000s, along with standard cable drums, S-hooks, and swedged cable ends.
Replacement drums on hand
For most Laporte calls, matching cable to the existing drum is enough. If a drum is worn or grooved to the point that it won't hold new cable evenly, we carry replacement drums for the common torsion shaft sizes too.
No custom cable fabrication
What we don't do is custom-fabricate cable for doors with unusual spring systems or non-standard drum setups - those jobs sometimes need a part ordered in, and we'll tell you up front if that's the case rather than cobble together something that'll fail again in a year.
Booking a Visit
We cover Laporte from our Fort Collins location, about 7 miles south, so there's no local branch here - just a truck that comes out stocked for the kind of door common in this area. If your door is sitting crooked, won't open, or a cable has visibly snapped, don't try to force it with the opener; that stresses the track and can bend a panel. Call to get a cable repair scheduled, and if you want to see what else we handle out of Fort Collins, our cable repair page covers the broader service area. You can also check our Laporte area page for more on what we cover here.
