What the Fix Involves
Most of the garage door stock across our service area went up between 1975 and 2012, with the typical build landing around 2005. Laporte sits well outside that curve.
Original 1976 garage setups
The homes here cluster closer to 1976, which means a lot of garages still have whatever came with the house when it was framed. We're not talking about a door that's a decade old and due for a refresh - we're talking about original jamb brackets, original track radius, sometimes an original single torsion spring sized for a lighter door than what's sold today.
Header rot after decades
A new install here isn't a swap-and-go. We pull the old track and jamb hardware, check the header for rot or movement after almost fifty years, and size the new door and spring system to current loads rather than whatever the original builder spec'd.
Header alignment corrections
That's a different job than replacing a door that's twelve years old, and it takes longer on the first visit because we're often correcting header alignment the old unit was hiding.

Why This Fails Locally
This area sits in a cold climate band with severe winter conditions, and original 1976-era hardware wasn't built for fifty years of freeze-thaw cycling on the same galvanizing. Steel tracks from that era pit and bind at the brackets; the bend radius on an original door panel can be off by enough that a new opener fights the track instead of running quiet. Combine that with a household base this size - Laporte runs about 1,053 households, smaller than the towns closer to Fort Collins - and you get a place where a cracked panel or a dead spring doesn't always get noticed fast, because there isn't the volume of contractor traffic that keeps problems visible. Median household income here runs around $67,697, noticeably below the roughly $105,017 median across the wider service area, which is part of why we see more owners stretch a repair further before committing to full replacement. That's a reasonable call on a newer door. On a door this old, a repair on original hardware is often just delaying a second service call.
Parts We Carry
For a town built mostly in the mid-1970s, the sizing that matters most is spring wire gauge and track width - the stuff that doesn't match what's on the shelf for a 2005-era door.
Spring range for older homes
We stock torsion springs across a range of wire diameters specifically because the older houses in the service area need heavier or lighter assemblies than the newer subdivisions do, and we carry standard 2-inch and high-lift track in both standard and low-headroom configurations, which covers most of what a header this old will allow.
Discontinued profiles need ordering
We don't stock every discontinued panel profile - if a homeowner wants to match a 1976 steel panel pattern exactly rather than replace the whole door, that part may need to be special-ordered, and we'll tell you that up front rather than quote a date we can't hit. For a full replacement, that limitation doesn't apply since we're installing current stock sized to your opening, not trying to match an old look.
Booking a Visit
We run installs in Laporte out of our Fort Collins shop, about 7 miles south. There's no local branch here - the truck comes from Fort Collins for the measure and again for the install - so we schedule both visits together rather than making two separate trips on short notice. Bring us the age of your house if you know it and whether the opener has ever been replaced; that tells us more about what's behind the panel than a photo of the door itself. You can see what else we cover from this shop on our Fort Collins installation page, or check our Laporte area page for the rest of what we handle out this way.
